St. Paul's Episcopal Church Cemetery
In 1722, two acres in the
Churchyard of St. Paul's Episcopal Church were set aside for the purpose
of burial.
Sadly, the first people
buried there lie in unmarked graves due to the lack of stone available in
the area.
At one time, St. Paul's was
the only cemetery in Edenton, thus they had a period of rapid filling and
during the late 1820s passed regulations about burials. However, the
issue was put to rest after the construction of the Beaver Hill Cemetery
in 1889 and the creation of both a Baptist and Methodist
graveyard.
Some of the most prominent
Edentonians were laid to rest in this fine cemetery. Three governors
under the Lord Proprietors had their graves moved to St. Paul's Cemetery,
they were Henderson Walker, Charles Eden, and Thomas Pollock.
The oldest surviving grave
marker in the Cemetery is that of Margaret Davison (1733-1753). The
most expensive gravestones in the cemetery belong to James Coffield and
his daughter, Marageret Lavinia Coffield Warren.
