E Church Street
128 East Church Street

St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, circa 1881

This Gothic Revival style church was originally built in 1881.  In 1884, the Church was heavily damaged by a tornado, and had to be almost completely rebuilt between 1885 and 1887.

In 1910 the Church began an expansion, adding on an entrance, widening the sanctuary, an putting in a two stage tower.

Connected to the Church is the St. John school.  The building was erected in 1902, but the school had actually began meeting in 1892.  It was discontinued in 1931, when it merged with the county school system.
