Edenton Academy, circa 1800
This building was built in 1800 and was at one
time the site of the Edenton Academy. After the construction of a
large Victorian building in 1895, the academy was separated into two parts
and moved to its current location and thoroughly remodeled.
To see a rendering of the original academy,
you can visit the Cupola House, where a drawing of the Edenton Academy is
on display.
The Edenton Academy's first charter dates back as
far as 1770, but it was reorganized in 1800. Samuel Johnston served
as the Academy's president, Josiah Collins, Jr. was the treasurer, and
William Blair was the secretary. In 1810, girls were allowed to
attend the Academy. It morphed into the Edenton High School in the
early 1900s.
In 1895, Baker Elliott bought the building and had
it relocated.
