The cannon stationed at the foot of the courthouse green were brought here from France to aid in the colony's struggle for independence from British rule. Other cannon from the same period can be seen throughout the town as lamp posts and other useful features. Though briefly resurrected for duty during the Civil War, the cannons were never used in battle.
