On April 4–5, 1819, the President of the United States James Monroe, his Secretary of War John C. Calhoun, the First Lady, and other government officials traveled to Edenton on a tour of the South. Monroe was met with a 21-gun salute and attended a public dinner at the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse. April 2019 marks the 200-year anniversary of this momentous occasion.
